Admission requirements

Review the basic requirements for two-year and four-year degrees for freshman and transfer students. Additionally, check out the admission checklist and take note of important dates.

Freshman students

Are You a Freshman?

• You have graduated or will soon graduate from high school or receive a high school equivalency diploma, and
• You have not enrolled in another college or university after graduating from high school or earning a high school equivalency diploma or you have fewer than 24 college credits completed.

Qualified Admission Requirements for students who graduate high school in 2021 or after :

KANSAS AND OUT-OF-STATE FRESHMEN UNDER 21 YEARS OF AGE

For automatic admission, graduates from an accredited high school must meet the following:

• Graduate with a 2.25 or higher grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale

OR

• ACT composite score of 21 or higher (SAT of 1060 or higher)

Qualified Admission Requirements for students who graduate high school prior to 2021 :

KANSAS AND OUT-OF-STATE FRESHMEN UNDER 21 YEARS OF AGE

For automatic admission, graduates from an accredited high school must meet the following:

• Complete the Kansas precollege curriculum (or the respective state precollege curriculum for non-residents)* with a 2.0 (2.5 for non-residents) or higher grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 Scale

AND meet one of the following requirements:

• ACT composite score of 21 or higher (SAT of 1060 or higher), OR
• Rank in the top one-third of graduating class

(If applicable, achieve at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on all transferable college credits) Kansas precollege curriculum:

• 4 units of English
• 4 units of Math (Nothing below Algebra I will be accepted) OR 3 units and ACT Math score of 22 or complete 1 unit by achieving 3 college credits in College Algebra

• 3 units of Natural Sciences (1 unit must be Chemistry or Physics)
• 3 units of Social Sciences
• 3 units of electives (English, Math, Natural Sciences, Social Science, Fine Arts, Computer Information Systems, Foreign Languages, Personal Finance, Speech, Debate, Forensics, Journalism and Career Technical Education)

For automatic admission, graduates from an unaccredited high school or homeschool must meet the following:

• Complete the Kansas precollege curriculum (or the respective state precollege curriculum for non-residents)* with a 2.0 (2.5 for non-residents) or higher grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 Scale

AND meet the following requirement:

• ACT composite score of 21 or higher (SAT of 1060 or higher) (If applicable, achieve at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on all transferable college credits) High school equivalency diploma recipients and incoming freshmen students 21 years of age and older can find admission requirements at pittstate.edu/admission.

There are provisions for a small number of exceptions to the admission standards. Please contact the Admission Office for more information.

If you do not meet either of the guaranteed requirements, you are still encouraged to apply. Your application will be reviewed individually.

What if I don't meet admission requirements?

Each Kansas state educational institution does have an exception policy allowing the admission of a limited number of students who otherwise do not meet qualified admission standards. To be considered for admission through the exception window, you will have to complete the petition and return to the Office of Admission. You will be notified by mail the status of your petition. The petition will be sent to you via email once you apply for admission.

If you do not wish to petition, Pittsburg State University does work closely with several community colleges and we encourage you to consider that option. For a complete list of institutions, go to www.kansasregents.org.

If you have any questions concerning the community college option or the exception policy, please contact our office at 800-854-7488(PITT).

• Schedule a campus visit or call 1-800-854-PITT (7488).
• Apply for admission and scholarships online. Priority date for scholarships is November 1. Submit official school transcripts and ACT test scores.
• Take the ACT and have your scores sent to PSU (if under age 21). Our ACT school code is 1449.
• Have your college or university transcripts sent to PSU (if any).
• Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning October 1. Apply online
• Complete the University Housing contract. In November, housing contracts are available at University Housing website
• Register for PITT CARES (orientation and enrollment for new students). Registration will be available beginning February 1 for freshmen.
• Submit your Proof of Immunization Compliance form. To view the immunization policy and to access the form, visit pittstate.edu/health.
• Have an official final high school transcript with graduation date sent to PSU.

• September - Now is the time to start applying for admission and scholarships.
  • Financial aid cannot be processed without your application for admission on file.
  • Apply for admission

  • Apply online any time after October 1st.

  Transfer students

  Are You a Transfer Student?

  • To be considered a Transfer Student, a student must successfully complete 24 college credit hours after high school graduation. Students not meeting this requirement will be considered incoming freshmen.

  For automatic admission, a transfer student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in all college coursework.

  • Submit your Proof of Immunization Compliance form. To view the immunization policy and to access the form, visit pittstate.edu/health.
  • Transfer student with fewer than 60 credit hours must submit a final high school transcript if they will be receiving financial assistance.

  • September - Now is the time to start applying for admission and scholarships. Financial aid cannot be processed without your application for admission on file. Apply for admission and scholarships
  • October 1st - Applying for financial aid? Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by this date for priority consideration. Apply online anytime after January 1st.
  • October - Interested in living on campus? Housing Information. Find detailed information on University Housing website
  • February 1st (fall)/December 1st (spring)- If you plan to apply for Pitt State scholarships, your Application for Admission and Scholarships must be received by this date for priority consideration. It is important that all transcripts are received by this date as well.
  • April/November - Plan to attend Pitt CARES for Transfers in April for the fall semester and November for the spring semester. During Pitt CARES transfer students participate in early enrollment. Visit Student Success Programs for more information.

  Transfer Equivalency Guides

  Final evaluation to determine PSU course equivalency is based upon course content as described in the catalog course description of the sending institution. This evaluation is performed by the Assistant Registrar-Transcript Analysis, who consults with academic chairpersons as needed. However, you can use our online Transfer Equivalency Guides to get a head start on seeing what classes at your current institution will for a specific credit at Pitt State.
  

  2+2 agreements serve to facilitate the admission and academic transfer of students from participating Community Colleges throughout Kansas in a vast array of majors offered at Pittsburg State University.

  Dual credit students

  Are taking dual credit classes in high school through Gorilla Dual Credit Program?
